Unforgiven - Character Relationships

The film Unforgiven was the recipient of the 1992 Academy Awards for both the Best Film and the Best Director. The release of the movie Unforgiven rekindled public interest in Western genres. Unforgiven was the third ever recipient of the Best Picture Award following Cimarron (1930/31) and Dances With Wolves (1990). So the question is, what factor, or which factors brought about the successful production and direction of the film Unforgiven?

The setting is in 1880, the “Wild Wild West” of the United States. William Munny is a former notorious killer about to set out on one more bounty hunt.

The film tackled issues of friendship, loyalty, bravery, violence, pride, revenge and morals. This interesting array of issues, coupled with magnificent acting on the parts of Clint Eastwood (William Munny), Morgan Freeman (Ned Logan), Gene Hackman (Little Bill), Jaimz Woolvett (Schofield Kid) and Frances Fisher (Strawberry Alice) captured the true essence of the Wild West.

In addition to the issues and character-to-character relationships, the next most contributing factor that gave this film the acclaim it deserved was the utilisation of many various cinematographic techniques. These effects included differing camera angles/shots, r

Another main character in the film is Little Bill. He is the sheriff of a small town called Big Whisky. The name of the town itself signifies the return of William to his old drinking habits (in addition to his killing habits). As a sheriff, Little Bill despises the unlawful beyond anything else. However in his passion of keeping the law he raises himself to a position almost above the law. He makes all the decisions and he is all-powerful. Everyone in town knows him and fears him as a ruthless sheriff who will do anything in his power to enforce the law. His merciless attitude is first seen when he brutally beats an unarmed English Bob whilst the townsfolk look on. He is using this example as a warning that Big Whisky will not tolerate or show lenience to the unlawful. His superiority is portrayed well with the use of camera techniques. When he beats William Munny and English Bob, both men are on the ground either crawling or rolling in pain. High angle shots are used to show their inferiority to Little Bill. When we see Little Bill, we see him from below, in a low angle shot suggesting his superiority to whomever he is beating. No music or sound effects are used in these scenes. The silence itself and the sound of his beating create a feeling of tension.
