Maynard Ferguson

I attended the Maynard Ferguson and his big-bop nouveau band concert on September 25, 2003. This was the first jazz concert that I have ever been too and I enjoyed the whole experience immensely. It was a great performance, great entertainment, and has exposed me to a whole new type of live music entertainment.

The concert took place at Washburn University’s White Concert Hall, and was free to all students with their ID. The concert was for pure entertainment, but it also was enlightening at least to me as being a newcomer to the jazz concert scene. The concert was brought to my attention by several different advertisements from wall posters, a posting on digitalcity.com and by my Jazz History professor Mr. Wilkinson. At the concert two bands played a total of three sets, the first group “The Unit” started at 7:00 p.m., and “Maynard Ferguson and His Big Bop Nouveau Band” began at 8:00 p.m.. I preferred Maynard Ferguson’s band the best.

The instruments and instrumentalists that were in the performance by Maynard’s band were: Will Donus on piano, Patrick Heskin-trumpet, Ron Torres-Saxophone, Kyle Trisew-drums, Mike Gabanowitz-sax, Stockton Halebrig-drums,

Karl Fisher- trumpet, Joe Porter-bass, Kevin Meades-trumpet, and Maynard Ferguson on trumpet. These instrumentalists came together to form all different types of jazz styles. They played be-bop, straight-ahead jazz, funk, swing, and classical and contemporary music to create a fresh sound within the classic big band form. Some of the tunes the band played were; Ain’t No Sunshine When She’s Gone, Girl from Ephimena, Darn that Greetin, A Milestone, MF Hit Medley, and One More Trip To Birdland. All of the songs that Ferguson’s band played sounded incredible and were well diversified in different beats, and styles of play.

In conclusion I now have a desire to go and see more jazz concerts. It opened my eyes to a whole new type of music that you can go see live. I had always thought that jazz was something you could only hear on compact disks not live. I now have a whole new outlook on the music and I am very excited to go see Wynton Marsalis and The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra on October 9.

Overall I loved the concert, Maynard Ferguson and his band were incredible and made a lifetime jazz fan out of me. The songs were well mixed, some were up beat and exciting
