At the opening of the movie the gang, Dead Rabbits, is preparing for a challenge against the Native Americans. After a brutal fight the Dead Rabbits leader is killed. As Amsterdam is introduced to the new way of life in New York he realizes that many previous members of the Dead Rabbits now hold important positions within the natives. One example of this is a good friend of the Rabbits leader becomes an officer, the strength of the city. The officer and the Natives leader work together to profit from the city’s government. When his father was killed, not only was the Dead Rabbits gang destroyed, no one was even allowed to speak of it. As profit was very important, people often made a living by stealing. For example, in the movie when a house was burning down people scattered, ran inside to grab what they could to keep for themselves or sell for profit. As one would think nowadays the first priority, when a house was burning down, would be to put the fire out. However when ‘gangs’ of firefighters showed up to put out the fire, their first priority was to fight for power of the street.
