Rape paper

Rape is the only crime in which the victim becomes the accused.

You probably know at least one of them well. You run into them in your everyday life. They may seem normal to you, but what they could be hiding is one of the scariest experiences any person could ever have. Rape is one of the most horrendous crimes that a person could commit on another, and it is even worse for the victim, because in 21st century America, rape victims are constantly questioned and undermined during trials. Victims of other crimes never have to answer questions like “Where were you? What were you wearing? How much did you have to drink?” (Ruby, Stop Tolerating 37). In fact, it is bad enough that almost 90% of all rapes are never reported, and as a result, 98% of the victims will never see their attackers apprehended, convicted, or incarcerated (37). Rape is a problem that America needs to stop tolerating and accepting, and start to fight. To do this, we need to remove the focus from the victim and require law enforcement officials to assume that the victim is telling the truth, instead of questioning them through the entire process.

Part of the problem is a clear definition of what con

Currently, as a society, we place too much focus of rape trials on the victim. It is unique in this aspect; we do not question victims of armed robbery what they had to drink

like the November 2002 Cosmopolitan. On the cover, it advertised 10 things you can do to avoid being raped. This is saying that it is up to the victim to avoid being raped, and not up to society to catch the rapists. Rape is an accepted occurrence here, especially in the city. Basically, we are told that if we don’t keep ourselves safe, it’s our own fault. The fact that rapists exist is accepted “in a way that the presence of armed robbers [are] not” (Ruby, Stop Tolerating 37). We do not tolerate robbery, and the storeowners are not blamed for being robbed, so why should rape victims be blamed for being raped? It just makes no sense.

…what if we REALLY did not tolerate it. The way we don’t tolerate male frontal nudity in public. The way we don’t tolerate shitting in the public hallways of commercial office buildings. The way we don’t tolerate peeing in taxicabs. It just isn’t done. Of course all of these things happen extremely rarely. And they are considered freakish, not the norm, not a matter of course. We don’t constantly have to be on the alert lest someone
