An American psychologist, states that our communication consists of 55% body language, 38% is expressed through tone and voice, and 7% is communicated with words. A communications expert, Mario Pei, once estimated that humans can produce up to 700,000 different physical signs (Axtell 10). Body language can express many of our feelings, regardless of whether we keep our mouths shut or not. Sometimes it is easy to tell what is on a person’s mind by the way they position their body.

Of all the features of the face, the eyes are the most important in the communication process. The eyes have been called “the windows of the soul”. Listeners make an assumption that is a person looks directly at them, the speaker is being honest and know what he or she is talking about. On the other hand, if a speaker looks away before actually speaking and before answering a question, it is perceived as being not honest or is having difficulties answering the question. When you speak to someone, you should look at his or her eyes. If you did not look at their eye, they would think that you are bored of them. The eyes can also predict if you are lying if you are looking down when you answer a question. The eyes provide signals concerning emotions, attitudes, and relationships where no other body cues may be found (Richmond 75). Looking at people in the eye can mean lots of things. It can show trust, interest, attentive, and annoyance. People who use eye contact are viewed as confident, credible and having nothing to hide. When you do not look at people, they think you do not care. Sometimes strangers would stare at people in a threatening way, and this gets very uncomfortable for the person that is being stared at. Couples would stare at each other showing that they are in love. When your eyes are wide open, this shows terror or fear. If you have liked a person across the room, you would wink to show that you like that person. If you wanted to show disinterest or disrespect, you would roll your eyes at the person.

It is important for people to have their “own space“. When you talk to someone, you are in a certain distance from that person. When you love someone, you get closer to him or her than you would a stranger. So there is an invisible line that surrounds a person. If a stranger crosses the line, you would feel uncomfortable; they get too close for comfort. In David Lewis’ book, The Secret Language of Success, he points out the preferred distances for different encounters. Distance also plays a role in signaling the beginning and the end of a conversation. When you are talking to someone, and he or she is starting to move away from you it means that she needs to go, or she wants to leave. It also signals something about how intimate, and how personal the relationship is between two people. The intimate space is reserved for making love, embracing, comforting, and protecting (98). This distance is stay within six inches or less. There is the far zone for the intimate distance and that is between six to eight inches. This is for the relatives, spouse, children, lovers, and friends. Then there in the personal distance which is 18 to 36 inches. This is reserved for close friends. The third is social distance, and it is seven to twelve feet. This is for small groups like meetings or interviews. And finally is the farthest one which is public distance, and it is 12-25 feet, and this zone is for strangers.

Most people may not be able to tell what messages they send to other people, and you may not understand the messages that other people are sending you. The way a person stands, positions their arms, and smiles can tell a lot. Body language usually does not lie. Facial expressions also give clues as to what other people are thinking. Men and woman typically have different movements, which mean different things. There are different ways of showing your body’s language such as posture, distance, hand gestures, body gestures, facial expressions, and eye contact.

Body language varies country to country. Greetings is a good example of this. In America and some countries, we shake hands when we meet someone. In China, they bow their heads. In India, their hand are placed in a praying position accompanied with a bow. When you have fallen, and you give an “A-O.K.�
