1. In your opinion, which childhood experiences most influenced Essie Mae (Anne) Moody?I don’t think that there was a particular event in her life that hit her so bad to influenced her. Essie Mae’s childhood was troubled. Her family was poor and her mother struggled to provide food for Essie Mae and the rest of her ever growing family after her father left her mother for another woman. Even when her father was home, Essie Mae’s parents had little time to spend with their children and her mother had even less time now that she was their only support. Essie Mae’s first memories were of an abusive cousin that babysat them and the marital problems between her parents. When Essie Mae becomes aware of racial differences, she asks her mother about it who refuses to answer Essie’s questions which further adds to the confusion in Essie Mae’s life. Essie Mae has more problems when her mother moves in with another man (Raymond) with whom Essie Mae does not really get along.
