Condoleezza Rice

Condoleeza Rice is the first female and the second African American, after Colin Powell, to hold the position as National Security Advisor. She has always been the youngest and smartest person in the room. Rice has held many leadership positions in her many careers. She is known as “Bush’s secret Weapon” and has been called “the most powerful woman in the world.” She is known for her expertise on Russian affairs and arms control. She has achieved several firsts in her life. As a faculty member at Stanford University, she became the youngest provost in the institution's 110-year history and the first woman and the first African American to hold the position. As national security adviser, she holds a powerful position during a time when the United States is considered at war and she is reported to be one of President Bush's closest advisers. Her unique name is derived from an Italian musical term that means "with sweetness."

Rice was born in 1954 In Birmingham, Al to Angelena, a music and science teacher and John, was a pastor and dean of Stiilman College, a historically black college and later the vice chancellor of the University of Denver. Even in spite o

In 1989, she left Stanford to join the Bush administration as director, and then senior director of Soviet and East European Affairs in the National Security Council, and a special assistant to the president for national security affairs. In 1991, she left Washington and returned to Stanford. In 1993, she was appointed provost, which is the university's chief budget and academic officer. In 1999, she left Stanford again to join the presidential campaign of then-Texas Gov. George W. Bush. Upon Bush's election, he named her as his national security adviser and her appointment was confirmed on January 22, 2001.

As President George W. Bush’s national security advisor, Rice advises the president on how best to deal with international threats to the United States. She is the most academic member of the Bush foreign affairs team and - because of her gender, background and youth - one of the most distinctive. And, as a well-liked and trusted policy adviser, she has proved a useful ally for a president with little experience of foreign affairs. Rice faces what may be the toughest challenge of her meteoric career: managing the foreign policy agenda of the world's only remaining superpower at a time of rapid global change. Rice prides herself on a hardheaded, pragmatic approach to foreign issues.
