Book Review: Among School Children
The book Among School Children was written by Tracy Kiddler. The book is a day by day account of the activities of an elementary school teacher at Kelly School in Holyoke, Massachusetts. Kiddler not only included what went on inside of the classroom, but also the backgrounds of some of the students in the class. Kiddler spent nine months observing Mrs. Zojac’s fifth grade class. As a result of his observation, Kiddler wrote what turned out to be, as said by Robert Wilson in an article in USA Today, “a revealing, remarkable poignant account of education in America.” His goal in writing the book was to portray the state of education in America today and the joy of making a difference. Tracy Kiddler is the author of the national bestseller, House. He also won a Pulitzer Prize for the book The Soul of a New Machine. In the book the author address many issues that teachers are faced with everyday. He also includes many behaviors, attitudes, approaches, and techniques that a teacher should have when dealing with these issues. This book is organized in to sections that are named with different things that teachers have to deal with every day. Each selection includes how either Mrs. Zojac or her student teacher dealt with many s
There are many things that the author points about students and teachers and things that they believe. The author points out that most students do not realize that the teacher is not there to make them like them, but that they are there to teach them. This is an important point because new many teachers are intimidated because the students do not like them. The author points out that it is important to make sure everyone in the classroom knows who has the authority; he also points out that a teacher should not make the students afraid of them. Another point that Kiddler points out is that a lot of students that are given a Core Evaluation (equivalent to IEP) do not really need it. He states that the resource room that the students that have been “cored” are sent to is a like a dumping ground for students that teachers do not want to deal with. This is something that I noticed when I was in high school. Some of the students in lower level classes and special education classes are not there because the need to be, but because teachers have given up on them. Some of them are also there because they simply do not want to do the work (like Clarence in the book). After reading this book, I became more eager to become a teacher. I would recommend this book to all potential teachers. I would especially recommend it to the potential elementary teachers because it gives a day by day account of what goes on in an average classroom. It also addresses many of th
