Compare and Contrast Lord of the Flies and Of Mice and Men
Lord of the Flies and Of Mice and Men are two books with similar themes. Even though the plots of the two books are completely different, there are still some similarities between the two books, but there are also differences. The first theme that I would like to point out that both of the books have that occurs quite often is loneliness. The second theme that the two books have is the struggle over power. The third theme I would like to acknowledge is a theme that Lord of the Flies has, but Of Mice and Men does not. This theme is the need for civilization. Throughout both of the books there are many other themes, but these are the three that stand out. Loneliness is a common theme used through both books. In the first chapter in Of Mice and Men George says to Lenny, “Guys like us are the loneliest guys in the world,” (13-14). George says this to Lenny because he is describing their life style and showing how lonely he really is. In Lord of the Flies there are also signs of loneliness. The boys are stranded on an island with no one else to talk to except each other. After a while the boys separate into their own groups and each boy has his own way of showing his loneliness.
