Diazinon was first marketed in 1948 by a company named Novartis (now known as Syngenta)(Ewg.org). It was based and sold from Switzerland. It was also suggested that the name for this compound might be “dimpylate.” However it was later decided that Diazinon would be the stock system name for this substance. What is Diazinon? On Tuesday, December 5, 2000, the Environmental Protection Agency announced the “Elimination of all indoor uses of widely used pesticide Diazinon; begins phase-out of lawn and grass uses.” This took effect in March of 2001 for all indoor uses and will take effect in December of this year for outdoor uses. (W-S journal) The administrator for the EPA, Carol Browner stated: Diazinon poses a further risk to the environment. Reports indicate that Diazinon is “the most frequently detected insecticide (in water sources)” in US Geologic Survey’s Nation Water Quality Assessment program(nawqa.org). It is found in 24 states in at least trace amounts in every major river basin. In these states, most cases were above the EPA’s safe level. Further, due to the fact that it is in our water sources it poses a serious threat to fish that inhabit these waters and also the animals that water themselves and feed off these water supplies. The unsafe levels of Diazinon especially interfere with the ability of the juvenile Chinook salmon to detect predators in the water. This species is at risk from the Diazinon.
