September 11th Memorial Dedication Speech
Good afternoon and welcome to all who are here for the dedication of the new September 11th memorial right here in the heart of New York City. We are here to remember the infamous and cowardly terrorist attack on our country three years ago today. The attack on our country was not only an attack on America, but also an attack on the world, and on every man, woman, and child in this world. For as long as we all can remember, religion has been an important source of grace and support during times of war and violence, but in the midst of the September 11th attacks, many difficult questions were called to mind for many of us: Is there a God, and if there is, where was He on September 11th? Is religion itself to blame for the attacks on America? If so, would the world be better off without religion? Or is religion our last refuge? I am here today to reiterate to each and every one of you that God was present everywhere on September 11th and that religion was not the cause of the attacks on our country, but is in fact the cure for such tragic events.I pray every day for those of who renounced their faith in the Lord after that fateful day in September of 2001, for God was not the cause of the tragic events that pummeled our na
I conclude, today, with the image of a couple leaping from the south tower, reaching for each other as they fall. As Brian Doyle described the sight, “their hands came together with such extraordinary, ordinary, naked love.” This image challenges us with the need to make a judgment, a choice. Monsignor Lorenzo Albacete, a catholic priest, put it two ways: we can either give in to the hopelessness of human attempts to survive the power and the hatred of death, or we can “realize the greatness within our humanity itself that somehow shines in the midst of that darkness and contains the hint of a possibility, a power greater than death itself. Which of the two [do we choose]. It’s a choice. The choice of September 11th.” We will prevail over these hateful acts of terrorism! God bless America and her many heroes! Thank you. In coming together, we can utilize religion in a very powerful way to cope with the stress that we feel as the victims of this horror. Religion is so theoretical, yet so emblematic, and we can use the structure of religious beliefs to help us interpret the events of September 11th so that they make sense within our core belief systems of our own religions. It is important for us to come together, to pray together, and to find our own ways of interpreting the events of September 11th, however different they may be from the rest of the worldly opinions. Turn to God and ask for His help. Utilize your religious beliefs, for religion is the cure for our pain. It is also very important to remember where God was on September 11th. He wasn’t sitting back and laughing at our human folly. Instead, He was on each one of those planes giving each one of the passengers the ability to stay calm. We know this because there has not been a single report from a single individual who was called from a member aboard the highjacked planes who claims that there were screaming passengers in the background. God was also with each individual whom was employ
