Dangers of Stereotyping

The entertainment industry reinforces the dangers of stereotyping. It does this with music, television and magazines. Each of these mediums support and contribute to the many negative stereotypes that exist. This is a major problem because not only do they all sustain the stereotypes, but they also help create new ones. Stereotyping drags the society down as it makes the public generalize different groups, instead of treating everyone as an individual. This creates many wrong assumptions about every person in the world, and many of those assumptions are negative.

Entertainment is one of the biggest industries in North America. Since it is so popular across the nation, it is a very powerful influential tool. Rapper 50 Cent’s album “Get rich or die trying” sold over 872 000 copies world wide. The Fast and the Furious brought in over $40 00 000 during the opening day. Anything that is viewed, listened to or read by such a large amount of people is bound to influence many. This creates a lot of followers, which is extremely bad in some cases.

Television is the most powerful type of media. There are many types of movies and shows for everyone to watch. However a lot of this entertainment comes with some stri


The magazine business is the same way in many aspects, except for the way in which the information is portrayed. Many articles tell their readers how to act, how to dress, what items to buy, et cetera. For example if a lot of teens read a certain magazine, and they start to do what they read (which is not always positive) and this reinforces stereotypes. If there is a car magazine that publishes a lot of things about racing, some people will read that and go to street to race and not to the track. When enough people do this it reinforces the strong stereotype that was often created by television (Fast and Furious in this example). As all types of entertainment reinforce each other it becomes very hard to put an end to all the stereotypes. Even when the magazines are just showing the latest fashion, it can have a negative effect as well because then everyone who doesn’t fit the image described in it is often labeled as unpopular or different, and this often causes less people to want to socialize with that person. This means that almost everyone that wants to fit in has to conform to the image shown in magazines. This problem degrades the society since it makes people very narrow minded about others.
