Human Issues

Construction has come a long way since man has first walked the earth, from cave dwellings of the past to the giant skyscrapers of today. With every new inventions, or revelation comes a moral decision and how the population looks toward these new ideas that will hopefully better our civilization and lifestyles. Codes and regulations are set in every state to try to maintain order and a certain level of safety for the public, but how do these “standards” dictate our lives and keep us from creating a particular type of building. Why is this code important? Will it be enforced? Is it mandatory? For everyone? These ethics will be looked upon differently throughout different countries and cultures, but also the ethical stance will drastically change in our own country depending where the development takes place. Ethics play a major role in construction and development and how it affects everyone and it. What obligation do we as designers, contractors, contributors, and recipients have towards new developments and construction choices? And who is in charge of setting these standards for others? Do we as a nation have to come to singular chose or do certain circumstances dictate the decisions that are placed in front of us? What is

The method currently being implored, that we need to get as much as we can for as little the cost, is also affecting the planet as well as the people. Building codes and ethics used to be non-existent when it came towards maintaining the planet. Slowly this is changing due to the fact that it has to be done before we run out of everything. Design ethics are now geared towards harmony with nature rather than against it. With new technologies a new standard can be set that is morally sound in terms of the environment. The new technologies that are being developed help create more sustainable environments that are being looked at as new standards of conduct that are used in construction more and more.

This brings up the topic of what are the costs of such changes and who bears them? And how can we decide when costs are outranked by gains? People that develop this type of ethicists would have to bring up problems that happen everywhere in the world, since every country has problems of poverty, and isolation. No one feels they can do anything in particular about the situation and most people do not want to spend their earned money to benefit something that may not directly affect them. This is why costs almost always outrank gains. The buildings have to be made with the least amount of money to be put into them as possible. There is also controversy over how development's benefits, and burdens should be distributed within poorer areas and between rich and poor societies. This is a building ethic that should not be overlooked but sadly is.

Also in the past, and still today, America has had the mentality to mass produce everything no matter the cost. The mass construction of buildings has been detrimental to our lifestyle and our plant. While these constructions usually benefit people, many more are being oppressed by these decisions made for us. An example of this would be mass-producing
