A Bronx Tale

In the A Bronx Tale I found Conflict theory and Marxist theory to be the main 2 theories represented. These two theories intertwined into different dynamics all around Calogero’s upbringing. Calogero had 3 main influences on his upbringing, his parents, his friends, and the mob. Each group pulled him in a different way. When he gets older his new girlfriend also pulls him into a new direction which changes his outlook in the end on all of his influences.

In the movie the conflict theory was different because the people who held the power (the mobsters) were in the neighborhood, and not necessarily a higher class. The explanation for the way the system worked was based on fear. Even Lorenzo Anello knew that his kid should not say anything when he witnessed a murder on his stoop. Calogero knew at that same time that the worst thing you could be in that neighborhood was a rat. There were unwritten rules that everyone in the neighborhood knew. Even if you weren’t involved with the mobsters at the social club, you did not go against them.

After Calogero stuck up for Sonny, he tried to return the favor by getting Lorenzo involved in running numbers for the mob. Lorenzo had too much pride in being a honest working man t

Sonny told him to not to fall into the life he had. He never wanted Calogero to get hurt, and kept him from getting a gun, and told him to stay away from his wannabe mobster friends who were all going to get him into trouble.

During the fight with Calogero’s friends and the black kids, he was trying to protect the kids, but he didn’t want to look like a wimp either. Even in the end when they were in the car going to fight, he wanted out, but didn’t want to look bad to his friends. Sonny eventually pulls him out of the car, which in turn saved his life. The ironic part was in the end Calogero tried to save Sonny’s life but could not get to him in time.

Calogero was basically raised with 2 conflicting theories to his upbringing. His father who was an honest working man, tried to appreciate the things that he worked for, and to try to raise his son to have a better life. Then Calogero had Sonny who considered him like a son. Sonny encouraged him to stay in school, and to get an education which conflicted with how Sonny lived. Sonny’s lifestyle was based on fear so he could maintain control in his neighborhood. But there was more to it than brute strength. Sonny explained to him it was a lot of mind control also.

o get involved. He was trying to set an example for his son, and did not want to take any money earned
