The peculiar institution of southern slavery was the root of many if not most of the North-South conflicts. Slowly, a movement emerged from these opposing viewpoints. Many abolitionists came forward with extreme passion and sometimes obsession to end slavery. The fight got violent and many branches of reformers of other American ideals were brought together in the battle against slavery. Many free African-Americans, women, and white men were united in the abolitionist movement.
