Himmler

World War Two exposed many of the most inhumane, and brutal acts ever perpetrated “by” mankind, “against” mankind. This war revealed the identities of some of the most evil people, in world history. Treacherous men with names like, Hitler, Stalin, and Musolini will forever stain the walls in the annals of time. But have you heard of the name Heinrich Himmler? Himmler was Hitler’s right hand man, “He was one of Hitler’s most loyal men. Hitler called him ‘der treue Heinrich’ (loyal Heinrich)”(Holocaust History,2). Most people think that Hitler was the executioner of the Jews when in actuality; it was Himmler who carried out these unjust acts. Heinrich Himmler, was he a true solider just carrying out his orders, or one of the most evil men to ever emerge from the sewers of our past?

Heinrich Himmler was born into a well-off Bavarian Catholic family from Munich, Bavaria on October 7, 1900. Himmler’s father was the son of a police president and was a former tutor to the Bavarian Prince Heinrich von Wittelsbach. (Duncan Paragraph 2). Himmler was very devoted to his studies but yearned to become a solider, so when World War One broke out, Himmler gladly joined the army. But due to his failed health, Himmler

never reached the front line of battle. After the war, Himmler continued being a solider by joining in various veterans clubs. Himmler enrolled in the University of Munich in 1919 due to his father’s constant pleading. Heinrich’s boyhood passion was the study of agriculture. When school was over Himmler, like most young men, would go to the local beer pub and that is where he first encountered Captain Ernst Rohm “a man who managed to manipulate Himmler, and brought him into contact with Adolf Hitler. From here, the manipulated was to become the manipulator” (Duncan 2). In November of 1923, Himmler wandered into one of Hitler’s “ill-fated Beer Hall – Putch” (Arnold, 76) and in 1926, Himmler joined Hitler in the National Socialist German Workers Party (Nazi Party). From that tuime on, the growing death machine of the Nazi Party became more and more troubling.

After the Nazi Party’s purge in 1934, Himmler reacted to an uprising that would eventually bring down Hitler’s power. The uprising was led by SA, (Nazi Militia) leader Rohm. Himmler then developed an organization called the Night of the Long Knives. That allowed the SS to break away from the SA, which eliminated Ernst Rohm who was formally the head of the SA. Himmler’s SS became the major police force of the state. On June 17, 1936 Himmler was named Chief of the German Police, or Reichsfuhrer-SS, which gave him full control over the Gestapo, otherwise known as the secret police. Himmler also gained responsibility for the security services Sicherheitsdienst. (Encyclopedia.com, 1). With the control of
