The Importance of Unimportant Roles

In some literature the information kept from the reader can be more powerful that that given. In comparison, a character that is either never introduced or only appears briefly can influence the other characters. These characters can affect the action of the other characters, the theme of the work, or even how the other characters develop. In the three books, Catch 22, Deliverance, and A Streetcar Named Desire there are insignificant characters with a significant presence. In Catch 22 the dead man in Yossarians tent affects Yossarians behavior and action towards others in the book. The families of the four men in Deliverance affect the men’s actions concerning the mountain men and what they should do. The delivery man that travels to Laurel in A Streetcar Named Desire not only affects Mitch and Stella’s behavior towards Blanche but what happens to Blanche in the end.

The dead man in Yossarian’s tent not only affects Yossarian’s actions but also gives him an excuse to why he acts the way he does. The delivery man who travels to Laurel affects the actions of Mitch and Stella towards Blanche. When he tells Stanley of Blanche’s reputation of staying at the Flamingo it makes him suspicious of her. Stanley tells this to Mitch because he is his friend and doesn’t want him to get hurt. Instead of Blanche and Mitch getting married, Mitch ends their relationship. Mitch can’t trust Blanche anymore because she lied to him.. If the delivery man had not told this to Stanley they would have probably gotten married because Mitch would have never known the truth. When Stella learns the truth about his sister she changes her attitude toward her. Instead of defending her actions like she had with Stanley, Stella calls the doctor to take Blanche away. Stella realizes her sister is truly sick and needs professional help.

Even characters that are never introduced can have a very strong affect. Likewise, characters that only appear briefly can have a significant presence. These characters can affect the actions or even the feelings of other characters. Development of characters could also be affected. The dead man in Yossarian’s tent gives him a valid reason why he thinks everyone is trying to kill him. Even a man that never existed got kille
