Located on the west bank of the Nile, the Great Pyramids at Giza have endured the test of time through superior construction and mathematical precision. These engineering marvels were constructed during the Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom. These pyramids were constructed by three different pharaohs: Cheops, ca. 2530 B.C.; Chefren, ca. 2500 B.C.; and Mycerinus, ca. 2470 B.C.
These great pyramids served as tombs for the pharaohs. However, I believe that these structures served a much more important function. I believe that these structures were used as tools to control the Egyptian society.
I believe that the greatest factor determining the location of these magnificent structures was the Nile. The limestone, of which the pyramids were constructed, was derived from the east bank of the Nile. These enormous blocks of stone were then floated across the river to the west bank where the construction was to take place. This could only be done during the seasonal floods when
I believe that the Great pyramids were an architectural masterpiece. The construction of the pyramids provides a great deal of insight into the understanding and use of mathematics during the era. I believe this is the greatest marvel of the Egyptian society. The construction of these pyramids is also a testament of the ability to control a group of people to reach a common goal. I believe that this alone says a great deal about the society and culture surrounding the pyramids. These structures were built mainly as a tomb for a single man: the pharaoh and his transition into the afterlife. A great deal of insight about the culture, of the time can be obtained from the processes surrounding the preparation for the afterlife. I believe that there is still more to be learned from these structures. The relationships between size, location, and form still produce unanswered questions. Without a doubt these Great Pyramids at Giza are a wonder of the world.
