Through Plato’s philosophy to Freud’s psychology, a central point of accordance has been met. Both Freud and Plato attempted to help the individual gain control over desire through establishing order among the parts of the soul. There's a sense that if we are to establish civilized life properly, then the first thing we must attend to is the individual's sense of his or her own psychological and therefore moral makeup and in this respect, Plato and Freud are very alike. They have proven this with countless essays namely the Allegory of the Cave and The Interpretation of Dreams.

Freud has four types of dreams that he deems to be wishful. “Our first dream was the fulfillment of a wish, a second….a fulfilled fear, and …a third might be reflection, while the fourth might merely reproduce a memory.” (Jacobus, 330) Personally I have experienced all four, but I would like to focus on the fulfillment of a wish. I had dreamt one night that I had been in a stretch limo with famous basketball player Michael Jordan. We were having drinks and just having a good time before an important playoff game. I went to shake his hand and then I woke up. I was really distraught when I woke up and Mike was not around. I really wish I could of fell asleep for a couple more hours but that was not going to happen because I had to be at the bus stop in 15 minutes. I soon realized that I had seen a basketball game the night before and this game must have sparked my intellect. When one wakes up from a dream, he/she is brought back to the reality of life, and the stresses of coping with it, which is also a critical part of becoming a full fledged contributing adult in society. This small let down from waking up from a dream, helps one cope with the later, more intense, issues in life. One becomes illuminated, in a sense, when their dream can be unravel to reveal true meanings. The mind and soul are very complicated and abstract in dealing with dreams and illumination, but both are indispensable when referring to the bettering of society, because when one can interpret a dream, and one becomes illuminated then they learn about themselves in conceptual way, thus the first building block to establishing a civilized life.
