The most common types of blunt trauma during pregnancy are “slips and falls”, motor vehicle accidents and assaults. In pregnancy, syncope occurs frequently. The syncope of pregnancy often results from compression of the inferior vena cava, as described earlier, or from normal changes in the cardiovascular system associated with pregnancy. Also the weight of the gravid uterus alters the patient’s balance, making her more susceptible to falls. (Paramedic care: principles and practice, vol. 3, pg.668). In motor vehicle accidents, the opportunity for blunt trauma is the most common. Even in the restrained patient, the seatbelt can cause significant force on the fetus. Due to it’s close proximity. Even the slightest motor vehicle accident can translate to an enormous amount of force generated through the lap and shoulder restrains .In the second phase of the motor vehicle accident, when the fetus moves in the mothers body, it can be subjected to blunt trauma from within the mother’s body from striking the spinal cord. This can also cause trauma to the potential mother, most often to her spinal cord, liver and pancreas.
