Nowhere is the contribution of immigrants more apparent than in the high-technology sector. Silicon Valley is a perfect example of how skilled and educated immigrants helped to develop new products, such as the Java computer language. This has helped to create employment opportunities for millions of Americans. According to some estimates, one-third of Silicon Valley’s engineers are foreign born. They include immigrants from Europe, China, India and Israel. All have brought innovative ideas and entrepreneurial spirit that helped to boost the United States economy (Engardio & Burrows). According to the National Science Foundation 23% of United States residents who have PhD’s in science or engineering are foreign born (Gleckman). The best example of such immigrants is one of the greatest physicists of all time, Albert Einstein (Grace and Doherty). Immigrants like him, well educated, skilled and highly motivated had a positive influence on United States economic development and growth.

Finally, the conventional way of thinking and mindset must also change. In the past, United States immigration policy has concentrated on the Mexican border while the Canadian border has basically been ignored. The Canadian border is twice the size of the Mexican border yet only 1 agent was posted every 50 miles along the Canadian border while thousand patrolled the Mexican border. The enemies of the United States are well aware of this disproportionate allocation of resources. It was at the border-crossing station in Washington State in December 1999 that a terrorist was apprehended with explosives that were to be used to blow up Los Angeles International Airport during the millennium celebrations. This incident showed the need for tougher standards (Brill).
