Panthesism

Define Pantheism . How does this belief differ from Monotheism and Polytheism .

Pantheism is the belief that God and the world are one (McFarland 268) . The name pantheist was introduced by John Toland (Clark and Geisler 8 ) . Pantheism is often confused with polytheism - the belief in many Gods(McFarland 269) . Pantheism is neither a theism nor atheism but is the belief that god is everything (McFarland 268 ) . If you were to look at pantheism roots you would find that “pan” means all and “theos” means God (Clark and Geisler 8 ).

Pantheism is an ancient philosophy and has become incorporated in many religions such as Buddhism or Hinduism (Schopenhauer 57 ) . Pantheism is not a theism. It does not believe that God is the creator of the universe and the judge of humans . Many pantheist feel the word “God” is too loaded with these connotations and never use the word in their own practice (Harrison Pantheism) . The reason people might believe in this religion is people have many different concerns in life and maybe one god can not provide all their values. Some believers were raised this way to worship many gods. In contrast, Monotheism is the belief in only one God.

Value (Schopenhauer 87). However in our Culture the main belief is that we only have one God. In my opinion Polytheism and Pantheism has converted into Monotheism over Centuries. To me, it seems has if the Greek and Roman Gods are similarly to our role models. For example, we choose a role model by deciding what we like about the person. This is the way I believed most people picked their God that they wanted to worship.

On the other hand, Monotheism and Polytheism are somewhat different form Pantheism. Monotheism is the belief that there exists exactly one God (Engel and Engel 125). Polytheism speaks of many Gods and goddesses (Walker Intro to Atheistic Activism). Monotheism and Polytheism is a term applying primarily to a concrete system of religion (Walker Intro. To Atheistic Activism). Monotheism enables the mind to recognize the existence of God as a morally certain truth (Walker Intro to Atheistic Activism).
