After much constructing, both Rodia and Paul had the desire to flee away from everything. Rodia fulfilled his desire, and Paul was still stuck, for he was needed by his family. Rodia disappeared after he built the towers, never to return, and who knows why? Paul wanted to run away, because he lost all faith in everything. He knew that his family could not survive with out him, so he returned to them.

There is little known of Rodia’s biography and his religion backround; however, there are some theories about his religious beliefs. He did build fountains, and some say that he used those for gatherings such as baptisms or weddings. Some say that his cone-shaped sculptures have a connection to the festa of San Paulina. There is a celebration that takes place in Brooklyn every July. The Italians rejoice for San Paulina’s return when he was liberated from prison. This saint was from Compania, Italy, where Rodia was from. The parade-like even includes decorated wooden frames called lilies. These style and shapes of these statues may have been an inspiration to Rodia and his towers. The “ship” also incorporated in Rodia’s “city,” may have been encouraged by the boat used by San Paulina upon his return. Rodia named his creation “Nuestro Pueblo” which also may have some correlation to a religious meaning. He also preached at a Mexican tent-rivival church, where his message was, “true freedom, freedom of spirit and soul.” These men were searching for freedom, and they seemed to find this.
