Affirmative Action
The topic of affirmative action has been of great debate for many years,most recently in the state of Michigan concerning college admissions policies. To the best of my knowledge affirmative action has not affected me directly. The idea of special treatment for any group of people is unjust. Growing up as a child I was always taught to be color blind, and to treat everyone with respect and equality. Employers and schools are forced to do the opposite. This nation has made many mistakes concerning race relations, but how long must the innocent pay for these mistakes. Employers and schools should base their decisions on the qualifications of the applicant, not the color of their skin or gender. There was a time where affirmative action was needed, however that time has passed. The first article is "Affirmative Action for the Better", by Kevin T. Fowler. Mr. Fowler's article mostly covers the topic of hiring practices to create racial and gender equality in the work place. Fowler goes on to state that "affirmative action was basically imposed to prevent the dominance of one particular group in the workforce.Prior to these laws, the white male dominated the workforce." He also describes the difference
"Any program that treats groups in society differently will generate to respect someone who got there by the color of his or her skin. The third article is titled, "What does Affirmative Action Affirm?", by efficacy of anti-discrimination laws. The objective of having these anti- idea of using discrimination to create diversity is counter productive. They are often put into a position they may not be ready for and
