The setting is one of the busier “Home Depot’s” in Montgomery County. The purpose is to observe a group that typically works a shift outside the normal scheduled 9:00a.m.- 5:00p.m. work day. A typical day for starts for this group between 6p.m. and 9:00 p.m., the building was filled with people shopping, because the store closes at 10:00 p.m. The store was immense and very busy. There were many employees helping the costumers with thoughtful and courteous manors. The floors were concrete and nondescript kept mostly clear of debris for safety reasons, though that rule was not really adhered to after the store
Through the course of the night many interviews were made of many of the workers from this night crew. All were asked the same questions, and for the most part they addressed why each one was happy to be working for this company. It was pretty clear that most were happy working the night shift over working during the day. When ask why, they were happy to tell details about their work ethics and that the day crew, even though doing the same work was somehow never able to accomplish the same caliber of work? The night crew was the “back bone” of the inventory replenishing aspect of this company. The first two visits were filled with extreme intensity from unloading the many trucks and bringing them to the floor to be handled. However the second two visits were a little different in that there was a rush to get things completed and cleaned up. It was observed that even though there was a leader, in the second part of the day many individuals of the group became self-appointed leaders of smaller groups to do specialized jobs, like setting displays and straightening isles. This action was a normal activity and when the supervisor was asked he welcomed the initiative so long as they came through him for final say so. The people working were clad in baggy shirts, some polo style, but comfortable, blue jeans or sweat pants. There was a chain of command that existed that aloud for authority structure within the group, consisting of a store manager, though not in the store at night, an assistant manager during the night shift, a supervisor, and then the workers. Everyone wore an apron and a back support device. From the back of the store was a steady traffic of pallets being brought out for the crew to put on the shelves. An informant stated that prior to 1:00 there were sometimes as much as one hundred fifty to two hundred pallets of merchandise brought from the back to the floor every night. Much of the work after closing was handled by large equipment operating on the sales floor. For every piece of large equipment there were two people watching for safety reasons while the store was open, this was reported to the observer by an employee stating it was, “to prevent accidents because the company had a few in the past.” The traffic was cautious and respectful of the shoppers still in the store prior to closing however after the last costumer was gone, the pace picks up extensively. Having no outside costumers to imped the flow of work, the group worked at a furious tempo. The music was turned on and the empty pallets and boxes could be seen placed at the end of every isle for the receiving crew to gather and disp
