The one most important factor in the Cold War was the Alliances that were created on the nation-state level. The way in which the US and the Soviet Union formed their alliances were through the spread of their ideology and there money to other countries so that they would influence other countries into joining the fight. The United States sponsored a number of regional alliances and in 1949 the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was created. The Soviet Union responded in 1955 with the Warsaw Treaty Organization (Warsaw Pact) During World War II, the US dropped an atom bomb on Japan, who at the time was one of their biggest enemies. After the War, the US pumped billions of dollars back into the Japanese economy because it was afraid that Japan was going to become a communist country and they would have been intimated if China, Russia and Japan were all communist nations. Nations like England, France and most of Europe was backing the United States and countries like China, North Korea, Cuba and Vietnam were backing the Soviet Union.

On the Individual level, in the early parts of the Cold War it was a strict hatred and competition between the two countries but in 1964 the two countries started to improve relation between each other. President Nixon and Soviet leader Leonid I. Brezhnev were involved in summit meeting that were designed to help ease tensions and develop good relations between the two countries. Every leader for both the Soviets and the US had their different assessment on the situation.
