Civil War assesment

The Civil War: A look through a slave

*When I was little and started working on the plantation, I thought that was what I was going to do forever. My Daddy worked on the plantation and his Daddy before him, and his Daddy before him. It was the only thing my family ever did and probably the only thing we was ever going to do. My job didn’t seem so important to me, I just picked the cotton everyday and tried to stay out of trouble to escape the beating from the white men. Sometimes me and my friends were beaten for laughing and fooling around during the day. Life was hard and one day we wanted to see a change.

*Sometimes we’d hear the older folks talking ‘bout being freed but we never thought it was really going to happen. Wasn’t ‘til the early 1800’s when I started believing them. Late at night on the plantation black folks would gather ‘round and start talking about the north and how they was looking to free us blacks. Said they were trying to argue whether or not slavery was morally right. Northern folks said it was against god to enslave any man against his own will and that it was a sin. Southern folks argued right back that in the bible there are slaves of the disciple

*A man named John Brown Caused quite a stir. He fought and killed many white folks in different parts of the south fighting against slavery and trying to prove something. He’s what people round here call a Martyr. I asked my Daddy what a Martyr was and he told me it was someone who died for a cause. I suppose its sad that John Brown died for us black folks but It brought me hope. Hope that the rest of them white folks see that slavery should come to an end.

*For the most part, my two accounts were going for the same cause. They were both against slavery except at one end of the spectrum you hear from a black slave recently freed and at the other end you hear from a Union white soldier. I tried to be accurate With both sides, presenting arguments that were factually and theoretically correct in accordance with what we went over in class.

*Son, there comes a time in every man’s life when he needs to fight for a cause. As the north prospered in industry and had a budding economy, the south slowly fell apart. They were dependant solely on one thing, slavery. Slavery was easy for them because it was cheap. They didn’t have to pay for workers and they made a great profit which they kept for themselves. Meanwhile only 11% of the southern population was rich plantation owners and the rest lived in poverty. The wealthy and powerful were ignorant to the failing southern economy around them. They firmly believed they could thrive on agriculture and slavery and the threat of it being taken away was something that scared them unlike anything else.

*Many people may not think that slavery is such a bad thing. For them, maybe hearing the personal account of certain people can change there mind. There was a woman who once lived named Harriet Jacobs. She lived under the cruel ownership of a white family. The head of the house took a particular liking to her but in a very inappropriate and sinful manner. He would beat her and he separated her from her young children. When she tried to escape he invested all his time into tracking her down and bringing her home. She ended up spending many years cooked up in an old attic with only enough space for her to crawl. Many slaves didn’t even get to escape. They were enslaved and tortured there entire lives. Son, no man no matter what the color of his skin, deserves to be treated in this manner. No man or woman deserve to be beaten to death. No man deserves to watch there children be shipped off to another plantation, never to be seen or heard from again. No man deserves to work long and hard all day long and to not have anything to work to. No man deserves to know that every day no matter what they wont be free to do as they please but that they will in reality always be some other mans property.

*Son, I fought this war to give these men something to live for. “All men are crea
