This story by Ambrose Bierce has received more critical attention that any other piece of work by him. It is obvious that this story is way ahead of its’ time. Peter Stoicheff from Newberry College said it was “something uncanny” “ Each motion associated with Farquhar’s hanging can be seen affecting the dream he and the reader are immersed in until the very last part of the story”. Occurrence at Owl Creek dramatizes hope in the face of death, and sets a writing style that is still used today in suspense novels and films.

Ambrose Bierce was born in Ohio in 1842. He started out as a brilliant journalist for the Cosmopolitan, and was cited as being bitter in most of his writings for that paper. The Cosmopolitan is where Ambrose basically started the “writing” chapter of his life. . During this time he became highly influenced by Edgar Allan Poe for his twisted page turning writings, and his depiction of life and death. Bierce later wrote tales of his Civil War experiences which gave him a lot of recognition, but the one that got the most attention was Occurrence at Owl Creek. After this story came out, others would follow the same method of writing that made Ambrose so well known. One example would be a movie written over a hundred years later, and would clearly come from the unique style of Ambrose Bierce. The movie “The Sixth Sense” is a psychological thriller that was made in 2000. It is about a boy who could see dead people all around him. Dead people that don’t know that their dead and constantly talk to him like nothing is wrong. The boy seeks help to stop the horrifying distractions that plague his life. Bruce Willis plays a phyciatrist who wants to help the little boy overcome his alleged visions. Prior to meeting the boy, Bruce gets out of the hospital for a minor gun shot wound from a household intruder that tried to rob him and his wife. His wife leaves him eventually, and starts seeing other men. Throughout the movie Bruce tries to help the boy to be brave and move on from these so called ghost visions. There is no progress with the boy, and at the end of the movie Bruce realizes that he is dead himself. He did not survive the gun shot wound from the robber and his wife was simply trying to move on. That is why there was no progress with the boy. He was simply another lost soul that would not leave him alone. In 1961 the movie ‘Carnival of Souls’ uses the same plot to portray the quest for truth regarding one’s existence. In the movie Mary Henry seeks out the truth in spite of her fears of death which she comes to terms with in the end.

The next part of the story is a masterpiece. Bierce does a miraculous job keeping the reader hooked, and getting their hopes extremely up to fact that Peyton just might make it.
