Bontsha the silent
After reading the short stories in The Penguin Book Of Jewish Short Stories there were many that caught my attention. The tale of “Bontsha the Silent” seemed to be my favorite and the story of “The Pagan Rabbi” was definitely my least favorite. The story of Bontsha discusses a man who goes through his whole life “silent”. He was born in silence and died in silence as the story says. No one celebrated in his birth and when Bontsha died the wood that was his gravestone was burned so no one knows where he lays to rest. Many horrible things happen to Bontsha throughout his life; his wife leaves him, one man owed Bontsha money and went bankrupt never repaying him. Bontsha did not ask for any money but went on living his life. He never complained, and was always walking around unnoticed with his head hung low. Ironically however, when Bontsha got to Paradise, which I assumed to be Heaven, everyone knew whom he was. The young angels rejoiced in celebration and shouts of “Bontsha the Silent!” could be heard. God even knew that Bontsha had arrived. He was crowned with jewels and a throne even befo
On the other hand, the story of the Pagan Rabbi was un-enjoyable in every way. The story starts off by telling you that Isaac has hung himself. First of all, for someone to decide to take their own life is just appauling to me. I did not want to continue reading for that mere fact, but I continued on. The story tells of Isaac and his wife who is a gentile and the relationship they had together. The story goes on to tell us that Isaac killed himself because he wanted to become a part of nature and did not want to be a part of the artificial world that he was living in. Isaac loved nature and wrote a lot of books in a forest. The books were burned. Isaac was a very unusual person. It bothered him when he went to an orthodox wedding and the men and women were not dancing together. He was in a walking club, which was very unusual because Isaac was a rabbi and rabbis aren’t very active people. Isaac never learned to drive but he had many children so that made is difficult to get around. Isaac felt like many things in life were artificial tasks, which leads me to believe this is why he took his life. He fe
