Lahiri: The Treatment of Bibi

This story is about a woman that has live her entire life in despair. The main character of this story is Bibi. Bibi has found herself stricken with a disease that no one is able to cure. During the worse stages of her illness she finds herself convulsing from head to toe uncontrollably. These seizures come on her at any time and leave unexpectedly. The existence of her medical condition has given her an additional problem; she is disconnected from the world. She is a 29-year-old single woman that has had no connection with

Bibi becomes pregnant and gives birth to a son. This son serves as the cure for all of her ailments. Once she gives birth to her son she no longer has seizures. This leads to the conclusion that what was troubling her all of the time was that she needed balance in her life. The birth of her son was a high point in life to balance out all of the miserable experiences that she has had. The birth of her son not only gave her something to be happy about but it gives her someone to love and someone to love her.

The kind of love that an infant gives to a mother is one that is characterized by instincts. The child instinctly knows that this person is someone that will take care of them. In addition the child and the mother have formed a bond in the nine months in which the mother carried the child in her womb. This is a special time for both of them in which both of their bodies are changing and they are going through similar experiences together. Now Bibi is cured of her illness.

Bibi’s father was a math teacher that eventually devotes his entire life to discerning a pattern in the occurrences of Bibi’s seizures. This obsession with solving the equation of Bibi’s seizures, though in good faith has deprived Bibi of a more fulfilling relationship with her father. He observed her at all times and actually quit his teaching job to do so. He became so involved with figuring out the disease that he forgot about the person that was behind it.

In this story the reader is given a person that has nothing going for her in life. This life has lead her to despair and emptiness. However she is renewed when she is given balance with the birth of her son. The father of her son is a mystery that will never be solved however it is not needed in curing Bibi’s ailments.
