The Cider House Rules

The Cider House Rules is a memorable story about how far we must travel to find a place where we belong. Novel and screenplay writer John Irving with the collaboration of Lasse Hallstrom as the films director, made the novel and film an instant classic. Although the film won two academy awards for best supporting actor by Michael Caine and best adapted screenplay, the novel was a better rendition then the film due to its descriptive nature.

The most important parts and characters were taken and squeezed into a smaller period of time for the film, but in doing this many plot lines and characters were lost as well. This caused many differences between the novel and movie.

One major effect that the changes made was that the personality of the characters seemed different. The personality of the protagonist which is Homer Wells seemed different because in the film there was very little background information given on him. The viewer is left wondering why homer is the way he is.

Homer and Candy’s son Angel was completely cut from the movie. In doing this it changes the character of Candy and also adds more change to Homer. In the novel Angel was the secret son of Candy and Homer which was conceived while Wally was

In the film the lighting and heart felt piano score complimented each other perfectly. They worked together to effect the emotions of the viewer.

The apples are also a symbol in the film more than the novel due to imagery. The apple symbolizes the forbidden fruit of the Garden of Eden. The inner meaning of this symbolic apple is the forbidden sexuality and the consequences that comes with it. In the film Candy has a come-hither look on her face as she bites into the forbidden apple. In another scene Homer is shown how to pick apples from a tree which symbolizes his sexual initiation. Both Homer and Candy knew that their affair was forbidden in both the novel and film yet the both of them pursued it anyway.

The novel acts as the background information and the film starts in the middle of the story. Nobody can start reading a story in the middle and catch on to everything.

In symbolism the broken rules are the rules of life’s moral codes relating to the three taboos of the storyline. Eventually this leads to Homer learning that abstract and formal moral codes don’t answer to the messiness of human reality. This is shown in both novel and film when Homer decides to perform his first abortion on Rose Rose a victim a incest.

Another thing that may be wondered is if Homer steps into the shoes of Dr. Larch with no real medical diploma, you begin to question if Dr. Larch himself is really qualified for his position. Again this is answered in the novel, so it is really a wise idea to read it before trying to tackle the film.
