Why the Drinking Age should be lowered

Why the Drinking Age should be lowered

The drinking age should be lowered because of many studies showing that to be 21 to drink legally is not helping anything. One main study to support my opinion is the irresponsible manner we drink as underage drinkers and the percentages from now to then when you could be 18 and drink legally. My second issue is how easy it is to get alcohol and you can bust as many people as you can but your never going to stop underage drinking. My other point I like to point out is the history of laws being passed and what has changed now from then in the drinking laws. In this report I?m going to express how drinking is not to be seen as poison or a really bad thing to do if we just handle the way we drink in a more responsible manner.

I have been on many websites and have researched a lot about underage drinking articles and the percentages being shown that just makes me wonder why we still have to be 21 to drink legally. Some of underage drinkers see drinking as being a part of ?adulthood?, ?a badge of rebellion against authority?, and that is enticing to most underage people. Those under the age

of 21 are more likely be heavy sometimes called ?binge? drinkers. Among university students 22% of all students under 21 compared to 18% over 21 years of age are considered heavy drinkers. Also among drinkers only, 32% of under age compared to 24% of legal age are heavy drinkers. One good thing is that from 1980?s to now there has been a decrease in drinking and driving because more education of concerns of drunk driving, designated driver programs, increased seat belt and air bag usage, safer automobiles, lower speed limits, free taxi services and drinking establishments, etc. But there has been a increase in other problems related to heavy and irresponsible drinking among college youth. Most of the reports have showed little change until after the 21-year-old law in 1987. In 1982 until 1987 about 46% of students report vomiting after drinking now that has jumped to 50% after the law change, cutting class after drinking went from 9& to 12%, missing class because of a hangover went from 26% to 28%, getting lower grades because of drinking rose from 5% to 7%. This increase in abusive drinking behavior is due to "underground drink
