Totalitarianism, is a centralized dictatorial form of government requiring complete subservience to the state, a person advocating such a system. In Nineteen Eighty-Four, Big Brother was the " Friend of the People" , the Inner Party Leader. His face was projected all day long through numerous forms of media."On each landing opposite the lift shaft, the poster with the enormous face gazed from the wall." His slogan "Big Brother is Watching You" was posted everywhere. The citizens of Oceania were not allowed to think, if they did so it was called Double Think. Double Think

The twentieth century gave birth to its most powerful and diabolical politician, Adolph Hitler. He became the leader of Germany and created a society that was controlled by strict regimentation of national and individual lives. All conflicting interest and unquestioning loyalty to its leader was reported to the service of the state. Hitler made up a program consisting of 25 points on demands, corruptions of socialist ideas and racist and anti-Semitic doctrines. In point 25 of the program Adolph concluded, "For modern society, colossus with feet of clay, we shall create an unprecedent cetralization which will unite all powers in the hands of the government. We shall create a hierachical constitution, which will mechanically govern all movements of individuals." This statement can compare to Big Brother’s video cameras governing all movements made by the individual of Oceania.

Oceania was a state in constant war differentiating from Huxley’s world that was always at peace. War seemed like a good idea for Big Brother; this way people would think that there was no better place for them and wouldn’t expect better living conditions, better food and less control by the government.

The slogan "War is Peace" was displayed everywhere. People were so exposed to it that they saw nothing wrong with the meaning of the slogan. Again in a totalitarian state there is no freedom of thought or expression.

Adolph Hitler abolished all political parties except the Nazis; strikes were forbidden and the unemployed were enrolled in labor camps or by the German army. Even children were indoctrinated through the Hitler Youth Mouvement. In chapter two of George Orwell’s novel, he mentions that the Parsons’ young one are also involved in a Party Youth Organization which encourages spying on others to detect a traitor. "You’re a traitor! You’re a thought criminal! You’re a Eurasian spy! I’ll shoot you, I’ll vaporise you, I’ll send you to the salt mines!" In Germany they also had the Gestapo, a secret police force created to suppress opposition. In Oceania they had the thought police who detected and inprisoned people who would act in a unorthodox manner. Adolph Hitler employed theories and techniques of scientific crime detection. The totalitarian secret police terrorized populations by using institutions and devices such as the concentration camps, predetermined trails, and public confessions. This is a similar procedure that Winston went through while he was held in room 101. O’Brien inflicted pain upon Winston and the Nazis inflicted pain on the citizens in cocentration
