Gypsies
The Disney version is set in France during the 15th century. It begins with a tragic scene of how Quasimodo came under the custody of Judge Frollo. His parents are Romani and are trying to illegally sneak into Paris via boat. (For some reason, even though they are poor and persecuted, every Gypsy in this movie has one gold earring in their ear). They are caught by Frollo and his guards, but Quasimodo’s mother runs away with him in her arms. She makes it to the steps of the cathedral and pleads sanctuary, but the door does not open and she is killed by Frollo. Frollo was in the process of exterminating Quasimodo, after discovering that he was deformed, but the archbishop advises him to take the baby and raise him, or he will suffer the wrath of God. Frollo is pretty frightened by this, the pious man that he is, and agrees to take care of Quasimodo and made him the bell ringer in the cathedral. The movie then jumps about 20 years in the future during the Festival of Fools. Quasimodo is all grown up with red hair and pale skin. It makes one wonder exactly how did this happen when both of his parents were noticeably darker skinned with black hair? All the Gypsies in this movie are portrayed as having dark skin, black ha
From this sexually charged conversation, it is hard to tell if this movie was made for children, or for adults. Frollo proceeds to threaten that if she leaves the cathedral, she will be his. Does that mean that he will put her in jail, or in his bed? After this song, Esmeralda meets Quasimodo again. They become friends and Quasimodo tells Esmeralda that Frollo has told him that all Gypsies are cruel and evil, but he believes that Esmeralda is an exception. Also, he tells her that he is a monster because Judge Frollo told him so. Esmeralda begins to read his palm, enforcing the stereotype that Gypsies are fortune tellers and palm readers. She tells him that he has a long lifeline and makes a big show of pondering over the other lines on his palm. In the end, she tells him that she sees no sign of him being a monster and that he should consider the fact that Frollo is a liar. Quasimodo agrees to help her escape from the cathedral after she explains to him that Gypsies are free and do not do well inside stone walls (this enforces another stereotype of Gypsies being carefree wanderers). She offers for him to run away with her, but he refuses. Esmeralda brazenly kisses him and gives him a necklace with a map to the Court of Miracles (the Gypsy hideout), so that he can find her whenever he wants. ir, and wearing one gold earring and scarves on their heads. Even Esmeralda’s constant companion, a goat named Djali, had one gold earring in his ear, as well. The Gypsy main characters all have green eyes, while the other Gypsies have brown eyes. This must have been a tactic to make the main Gypsy characters stand out amongst the rest of the Gypsies. At this time, Frollo has figured out how Esmeralda escaped the cathedral and decides to visit Quasimodo. He chastises Quasimodo for helping Esmerlda escape. Quasimodo argues that he helped her because she was kind to him. Frollo explains that Gypsies are not capable of love and that her kindness was only cunning. He cautions Quasimodo to remember the story he told him about his Gypsy mother and how she abandoned him when he was a child. Frollo then claims that he knows where the Court of Miracles is located and that Esmeralda will soon be his. After Frollo departs from the bell tower, Quasimodo agrees to help Pheobus find Esmeralda before Frollo does. They eventually find the Court of Miracles, located in the old catacombs of Paris. This is the first time that a multitude of Gypsies are shown together. Most of the women have their midriffs showing and skirts that left their legs bare, which, for the 15th century, would suggest that the women were prostitutes. Every Gypsy in sight has an earring placed in one ear and everyone, except for the main characters (Quasimodo, Esmeralda, and Quasimodo’s mother, who all had green eyes), have brown eyes. Frollo finds them and orders Esmeralda to be executed by burning on charges of witchcraft. Before he sets fire to Esmeralda, Frollo gives her the option to choose him, or to be executed. Esmeralda refuses him by spitting in his face and Frollo proceeds with her execution. Before the fires could consume her, Esmeralda is saved by Quasimodo. He takes her to the top of the tower and screams “sanctuary”. A battle between Quasimodo and the soldiers begin, and after much violence and several victories for Quasimodo, he is forced into an en
