Chuck Close is renowned as a painter, photographer, and printmaker, but best known and associated with the style of painting called Photorealism. Photorealism is a style of painting in which an image is created in such exact detail that it looks like a photograph, however it is made up of much smaller images depicting everyday things, or just a blurred color scheme. Photorealists such as Chuck Close will generally make a large grid over the image, and then take it apart piece by piece. They will then make a small print depicting an image, that has a similar color scheme and shade, and place it back on the larger picture. By breaking the larger image down into its smaller component parts, he is able to make decisions about the nature and properties of the various colors that he uses in his works. In his earlier works, Close was careful to hide the grid upon completion, but in his later pieces, the grid has become a visual element of the work itself, and is no longer simply for planning.
