Though the Tao and King both agree on the differences between just and unjust and the duties of the people, Taoism impresses the need to take passivity as opposed to taking action. There is a natural order omnipresent in all social contexts, and to try to take control of that order will cause unbridled chaos. What King would say in response is though his form of action is passive in the sense that it is non-violent, the need for radicals and tension between sides is imperative towards any social change. “Just as Socrates felt that it was necessary to create a tension in the mind so that individuals could rise from the bondage of myths and half-truths to the unfettered realm of creative analysis and objective appraisal, so must we see the need for nonviolent gadflies to create the kind of tension in society that will help men rise from the dark depths of prejudice and racism to the majestic heights of understanding and brotherhood.” He is saying that the most constructive action does not include violence; rather, it embraces high ethical standards to better the quality of life.

The Tao teaches that “thoughts weaken the mind” and therefore one should become ignorant to remain happy.
