Muslims and Chritians: Can't we all just get along?
Moron Air Base, where I am currently stationed in southern Spain was once a bloody battle field. From 718 AD until 1492 AD Catholics from Europe and the Moores (Muslims) from Africa battled over this beautiful country. This series of battles was called The Recon quest. When the Christians won a battle they would burn the existing mosques and build cathedrals. Similarly when the Muslims won they would burn the cathedrals and build mosques. If we fast forward to present day it seems very little has changed. The Middle East is in turmoil and terrorist attacks like September 11th, 2001 are performed in the name of Islam. Asama Bin Laden has declared holy war on America. Looking at the past and present it is hard to imagine that these religions could have much in common or even be able coexist but this paper will show that Islam is rooted in peace and has many ideals in common with Christianity. These religions can work together to better society. Christianity is based on the teachings of Jesus Christ. Christians believe that He is the one way to God and salvation. He is the son of God and part of the Holy Trinity; Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. According to Breuilly, Brien, and Palmer, “Christians believe that he is G
One similarity is a strong belief in monotheism; that there is only one true God. However, Islam takes the belief to a deeper level, ruling out Jesus as the Son of God. “They do blaspheme who say: Allah is one of three in a Trinity: for there is no god except One Allah. If they desist not from their word (of blasphemy), verily a grievous penalty will befall the blasphemers among them”. (Qur’an, 5:73-75) The Bible on the other hand clearly states that Jesus is God, “Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me”. (Holy Bible, John 14:6) According to Ahlul Bayt, the Muslim would say that the Bible was corrupted by man so it can’t be completely trusted; “Even though Jesus himself never claimed to be divine, Paul gave him this attribute for one reason – to gain converts among the Gentiles. The Gentiles were pagans who were used to worshipping gods that had wonderful legends and myths behind them”. (“Islamic Beliefs” 1) Though the religions disagree on whether Jesus is God they do agree on how to talk to God. Views on Human rights seem to conflict between Islam and Christianity; specifically those of women. Most of the Christian world thinks Muslim women are treated as property and have few rights. According to www.al-islam.org this is not true; “Islam equalizes men and women on the following issues: creation, religious obligations, honor, and dignity. The Holy Qur’an declares that men and women are born equal. It gives women such rights as owning property, engaging in business, choosing a husband, claiming inheritance, receiving education, and being treated with respect. (“Other Islamic Issues” 1) While many Muslim women do wear clothes that fully cover their bodies and heads this is more tradition than the Qur’an which only requires such clothing while in a Mosque. The country of Turkey is Muslim but has more relaxed traditions and most women do not wear such restrictive clothing. Again, this is a misunderstanding that has lead to a separation in the religions that should not exist. Another common denominator is that of giving and charity. Both the Bible and Qur’an teach that giving to those less fortunate is important and that God will reward of for our selflessness. Jesus said, “And the King will answer and say to them, “Assuredly, I say to you, in as much as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.” (Holy Bible, Matthew 25:40) Muhammad wrote, “And in their properties is the right of the beggar and the destitute.” (Qur’an, 51:19) It is clear that we must take care of those less fortunate but how do the religions instruct us to treat others in general? Christians study the Bible which they believe to be the direct word from God. Breuilly, Brien, and Palmer state, “It is divided into the Old Testament and the New Testament. The word testament means “witness,” and Christians believe that the Old Testament contains the witness of God originally to the Jews, and the New Testament the witness of people who knew Jesus or were closely associated with events in the early church.” (46) The Bible is th
