Forster uses the idea of Rescue as a continuous motif throughout the book. It returns with different connotations in different situations. For example, when Philip leaves to try and stop Lilia marrying an Italian. This is the first of two rescue parties and is a physical plan to rescue a character. However, Forster also uses the idea of rescue through the development of Caroline and Philip’s character. Here “rescue” has connotations of conversion and being saved. These two characters develop an emotional maturity am d knowledge of self that allow them to belong to the category of the “saved”. There are also failures associated with these attempts of rescue. Philip failed to prevent Lilia’s marriage to the Italian and the rescue party that departed to save the baby failed.

Philip has many pre-conceptions of Italy, of it being a fantastic place with intriguing people. However, when he goes out to Italy with the intent of rescuing the baby he is faced with reality and the reality of Italy. When Philip learns that Gino is a dentist he is being faced with the sordid reality of the engagement and the overwhelming beauty of Italy. This contrast resulted in him becoming confused and talking “a great deal of nonsense”. His fantasy exists but is tarred by reality. Philip is a conventional aesthete and, as is Caroline, a product of Sawston values and conventions. However, through his visits to Italy he becomes aware of the possibilities of life and the emotional greatness of humans. At the opera in Monteriano Forster illustrates Philip’s acceptance of Gino’s Italy, representing the uninhabited and relaxed social virtues of Italian temperament. When he’s pulled up “swinging by his arms”, he’s rejecting Harriet’s frigidity and what she represents, which is clearly the conventions of Sawston. Forster uses the word “conversion” to describe Philip’s personal rescue. He now believes humanity and human values are central. “Quietly without hysterical prayers or banging of drums, he underwent conversion. He was saved.”
