A Chorus Line
“Step, Kick, Kick, Leap, Kick, Touch, Again…” orders Zach, the director, to his group of auditioners for his new Broadway musical.The ensemble dances to their best ability in the hopes of catching Zach’s eye. By the end of the first number, “I HOPE I GET IT”, the group has been cut down to a line of 17 members. Zach continues his audition with an unusual interview in which the characters reveal who they are in the hopes of being one of the 8 members offered a part in his show. This is the premises of “A CHORUS LINE”, Quantum Entertainment’s latest hit at the University of Miami in the spring of 2003. Aside from the shows acting and singing, the characters were presented to the audience through their movements and dancing. Each character has a particular style and mannerisms and these were exaggerated to the highest extent to differentiate one character from the other and set them as individuals. After all, the show is about people and their individuality. For example: The character of Gregory Gardener embodies the stereotypical homosexual in the show. His mannerisms were flamboyant and included things like the “lose wrists” and shaking his hips he walked. His walk seemed to be more of a “
Sheila is another one of the veteran dancers in the show. She has been a “chorus girl” for all her years of dancing. She is striving to reach the lengths that Cassie reached and has become somewhat bitter toward her competition. She carries herself similar to Cassie, she walks and talks with confidence but this is just an act. She is trying to make herself seem strong so that she isn’t vulnerable in the case of a rejection from Zach. Ashley Turner carries this role to perfection and even carries it into her dancing when she suddenly stops dancing in the middle of on of the biggest dance numbers in the show because she was being upstaged. Dance, Song and Drama, What more could we ask for?
