Prufrock Analysis
In “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock”, through the mind of the main character Prufrock, the reader takes a psychological journey. Prufrock, a middle-aged man filled with self-consciousness, “epitomizes a man who has lost the “self-satisfactions” (commit, express, argue, and discriminate)” (Sigg 91). Consistently through the poem, he degrades himself with his insecurity, because “his figure has lost what Apollonian contours it may have possessed” (Deutsch 88). He doubts his true potential in society and question the reason for his actions. Prufrock is constantly changing the ideas flowing through his mind; from walking through the streets, to the stares of onlookers, questioning his true self, and in the end mermaids showing his dream-like state. Through the eyes of Prufrock, the reader is brought into a “psychological portrait, first person, the reactions of an individual to a situation” (Aiken 80). Prufrock gives off a sense of uneasiness and “fears the evaluations of others” (Sigg 92). In the first stanza, he appears reluctant to attend the social event; it is not that P
question himself once again wondering if it “would have been worth it after all” (Eliot 87) troubling over the petty issues, when larger things could be occurring. In the end, he decides that it is not worth it no matter what the memories may be. He reassures himself that “there will be time, there will be time to prepare a face to meet the faces that you meet…time for you and time for me” (26, 31). Prufrock has “measures out my [his] life with coffee spoons” (51) making him secure about taking days and events one occurrence at a time and not afraid of seeing “the eternal Footman hold my [his] coat, and snicker” (85). No longer does Prufrock fear death, yet he still fears society and their opinion of him. Towards the end, Prufrock enters into a dream-like state as he “grow[s] old…and shall wear the bottoms of my [his] trousers rolled” (Eliot 121). He prefers the trousers rolled, in order to experience the joy of walking along the beach and envisioning the mermaids singing aloud.
