The title of the book refers to Jerome’s teaching Bix the game of basketball. According to Jerome there must be “fakes” while playing the game to psyche out your opponent. Jerome has a hard time teaching Bix these fakes. These fakes are “the moves,” and what Jerome doesn’t realize is that those moves end up making Bix into someone that no one knows, and Bix ends up running away. Therefore The Moves Make the Man.

Jerome was a very confident kid considering he was young and grew up in an area that was predominately white. He never spoke of a father, only his mother and two brothers. He was a very smart boy and an awesome basketball player. Jerome got A’s in every subject. He seemed to be very happy with his life but was stubborn with thinking that “the moves” wouldn’t affect his everyday life off of the basketball court. His mother would try to warn him, but he didn’t listen and learned the hard way.

The whole book was an example of didacticism in the sense that Jerome was telling a story, but there were lessons being learned through out the story. A lesson of racism, friendship, and the most important is its okay to have those “fakes” on the basketball court but they can not be there in real life. You can’t let “the moves make the man”.

of the story revolves around many places. The boys are living in Wilmington, North Carolina. Before school starts, Chester Street Junior High School is going to be intergraded. Jerome was the only kid on his street that was able to go to this school, so he was the only black kid in the all white school. The scholastic change didn’t really affect him much. He had a couple of rough times but always remained himself and would often remind himself, “I’m Jerome Foxworthy.”

The biggest scene of the book was based on Bix’s learning “the moves”. Bix challenged his father to a one-on-one basketball game for the right to go see his mother. Bix’s mother was in a “crazy hospital,” and Bix thinks that his stepfather is keeping him away from his mother on purpose when, in actuality, Bix’s stepfather was looking out for his best interest.
