Creatine Supplementation

Citius, Altius, Fortius; Swifter, Higher, Stronger; This is the Olympic motto and really that of any athlete involved in competition. Athletes work day and night for years to transform their bodies into finely tuned machines ready to perform whatever task their sport calls for. Athletes have also been known to use whatever they can to gain an advantage in training and performance. As the effects of steroids became widely known and witnessed, and use of steroids and things of that nature banned from most major athletic competition, a new aid was sought. It seems, to many, that the miracle potion that everyone was looking for has finally arrived. It is estimated that as many as half of all Olympians who competed at the 2000 Olympic games in Sydney, Australia had trained while using Creatine.(France) What is startling about that percentage is that a good number of athletes competing were not involved in a sport that would see them benefit from creatine supplementation, meaning that virtually all who could possibly benefit, chose to use the supplement.

Athletes need to be aware and responsible for their actions, especially in this case because no one is going to hold the supplement manufactures responsible. Whether it is a positive drug test, muscle cramping , or even muscle tears, as some people have blamed on creatine, ultimately it is the athletes decision and job to use supplements responsibly and to inform themselves of the risks involved. In the case of creatine, I worry that there simply isn't enough information available. More testing must be done before an avid user experiences some unforeseen hardship later in life. Until such information is available I wouldn't use creatine myself or recommend its use to any athlete, professional or otherwise.
