Asian gangs got started in the 17th century by triads, which are secret criminal societies, to over throw the Chinese Dynasty in China. The triads spread through out the Pacific Islands to Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Burma, and Taiwan. Hong Kong triads have turned up in Great Britain and Australia long before the British will gain control of Hong Kong in China. The age of gangs varies from the time they were born to till the day they get started. Gangs will recruit new members at a younger age. There will be more juvenile gang members. They usually get stared about the age of 12 through 16 and usually stay with the gang till the day they died. The ages of gangs varied from 12 through 40 years of age. There will be a fourth generation of gang members of ages 10 to 40 years old, with many of them in their late 30s. The oldest gang members usually represent the leaders and the younger gang members look up at them as role models. Gangs usually wear loose knit clothing and the gang members did not associate with each other on a continuous basis. Burn marks and tattoos usually represent the membership in a gang. Hand signs and graffiti on walls will remain symbols of gang participation.

“Part of it because of my parents, they fight all the time. My dad used to beat up my mom and I whenever he drinks, and he drinks almost every single day….I didn’t really had a family back then,” said Mr. Kelvin Le. This indicated that he grew up in a dysfunctional family, and had to fight for his survive. By joining the gang he gained access to money, a second family, and someone to look up to.

I remembered Mr. Le told me that if he has a second chance to go back in time, he wouldn’t join the gang. Because it ruins his life: social life, as people fear him; physical life, as he had to work two jobs (at minimum wages) to maintain his family. Nevertheless, it was the decision that he made and he has to live with it.
