Through the ANC, Nelson Mandela played a significant role in the ‘Freedom Struggle’ by inspiring people to join the fight against the oppression of Apartheid, by co-ordinating the many resistance campaigns and by actively partaking in the struggle himself. In 1951 a Joint Planning Council was established to oppose six unjust laws, namely the Pass Laws, the Stock Limitation Act, the Group Areas Act, the Bantu Authorities Act, the Separate Representation of voters Act and the Suppression of Communism Act. The Council demanded the repeal of the six laws, if the government did not repeal these laws they would organize a defiance campaign. The government refused to repeal the law so the National Action Council began planning the Defiance of Unjust Laws. Nelson Mandela was the volunteer in chief of the campaign and began by speaking at pre-campaign rallies throughout the country, to protest against The 300 year anniversary celebrations of Jan van Riebeck and to gain support.
