Mexico
The country of Mexico is located in the middle of the continent of North America. It is bordered by the United States of America on the North, Guatemala and Belize on the South, the Pacific Ocean on the West and the Atlantic on the East. Mexico is bordered by the Rio Grande and is home to the Sierra Madre mountain range and the Yucatan Peninsula (Allen pp.3-4). This paper will describe some of the information related to Mexico’s current human and natural resources, economy, and the country’s social issues.Mexico is one of the world’s major producers of Petroleum (Allen, p.20). Other resources located in the country include the following critical metals: copper, iron ore, lead, and zinc (Allen, p.21). Production of food products in the country ranges from 70 to 75 million tons a year almost half of which is sugar cane. Mexico’s food production is largely affected by its climate which varies from tropical to desert. The crops grown are occasionally harmed by natural hazards such as tsunamis along its Pacific coastal area, hurricanes along both its Gulf and Caribbean costal regions, and earthquakes (CountryWatch, Key Sector Data). One major crisis Mexico is presently facing is the poverty in its Southern states of Guerrero, Oaxaca, and Chiapas. According to a study done by the World Bank Group, if this region of the country continues to fall behind “Mexico’s long term growth potential will be restricted.” On the other hand, Mexico has recently received a loan from the World Bank that should help its poorer areas “increase competitiveness and growth of micro and small businesses” (World Bank, 2003, Data Query). ring often have an impact on the country’s primary sector activities. Some issues the country is currently facing include deforestation, desertification, widespread erosion, and air pollution in urban areas. Furthermore, the fresh water resources in the northern areas of the country have become polluted and are now very scarce. The rivers in urban areas are also turning into contaminated resources due to raw sewage and industrial waste (CountryWatch, Key Sector Data).
