World War 2

No matter what mankind accomplishes we will always continue to fight against one another because confrontation between civilizations has, and always will be, burned into our instinctive nature. As pathetic and degrading as it sounds, the human race has always resorted to warfare as a means of resolving conflict between nations. All great nations have had unthinkable accounts of bloodshed as a result of warfare: from ancient Babylon to England and even contemporary America. The human race gives life, and then at the first hint of a disagreement, takes it away at the speed of a bullet.

Throughout mankind’s history there have been quite a number of these “disagreements” that seemed to have sparked the wick for warfare. Whether or not religion was the soul purpose of the conflict or if it was a mere fraction of the confrontation, religion has always played a part in any war. This is ironic because the sixth commandment is “Thou shall not murder.” Most likely more people have died in the name of God than for any other reason.

We begin our discussion of American Warfare by starting off with the war that was supposed to end all wars: World War I. This war began with a single bullet that would change international relation

Adolf Hitler became Germany’s Chancellor on January 30th 1933. This was that explosion that set fires of Nazism and a second World War.

ships forever. It all started on June 28th, 1914 in Austria-Hungary when a group called the “Black Hand” assassinated the Arch Duke, Francis Ferdinand. (Adams, 7)

Japan was a much more determined people when it came to war then Germany was. Though they won few victories over the course of WW II they just would not give up. When America came to notice that Japan would not give in, they decided to test a new weapon. The atomic bomb was invented and then tested on July 16th 1945. (Barr 457) America did not want to have to resort to this but it was the only solution to stop the uncomfortably determined Japanese Army.

The attack on Pearl Harbor is what brought America out of neutralism and into WW II. Shortly after learning of Americas’ “official” presence in this war, Germany immediately declared War on America. Over the next several months, with the help of the Russians, Germany’s forces were slowed. Russian’s (though less in numbers) were able to keep Germany’s forces from reaching Stalingrad on January 10th 1943. (Uschan, 109)

Shortly after the victory at Stalingrad, America proceeded with the bombing of Germany itself. As a result of this constant harassment in their homeland, Germany started to pull forces out of northern Africa, as well as several countries in Europe. America needed initiative and ground troops on German soil. It is the battle we have all heard of, the storming of the beach in Normandy on June 6th, 1944, which turned the tide for the allied powers over the axis powers. After about six months of fighting, German forces began to surrender. However the
