The protective tariff was made up to help the United States promote interregional industry. Alexander Hamilton came up with the protective tariff because, as stated on page 136 of our textbook, “he felt that the United States would never become a great power as long as it imported most of its manufactured goods.” A protective tariff put a high tariff on imported goods, which makes them more expensive than domestic goods. Therefore, people would be more likely to purchase the domestic goods because they were less expensive, and this would help to promote economic dependence within the United States. I can see how the protective tariff would work and force people to buy American made products, although this might have limited what some people could have bought. The Know-Nothing Party began as a secret organization in July of 1854. The reason it was called the Know-Nothing Party was because of the reply members of the party had when asked about the party, “I know nothing.” The members of this party were against immigrants, Catholics, and feared the slavery issues would destroy the Union. The Know-Nothing party showed some strong support at first, but the way their members were against particular religions and races was not a good way to hold together a national party. Also, people who were members of the southern and northern Know-Nothing Party were known to argue about issues such as slavery, a subject, which they had originally agreed to avoid. Eventually, the party split. One of the surprising things I learned about the Fugitive Slave Act was the fact that some slave owners were not interested in getting back their slaves that had escaped.
