The Know-Nothing Party began as a secret organization in July of 1854. The reason it was called the Know-Nothing Party was because of the reply members of the party had when asked about the party, “I know nothing.” The members of this party were against immigrants, Catholics, and feared the slavery issues would destroy the Union. The Know-Nothing party showed some strong support at first, but the way their members were against particular religions and races was not a good way to hold together a national party. Also, people who were members of the southern and northern Know-Nothing Party were known to argue about issues such as slavery, a subject, which they had originally agreed to avoid. Eventually, the party split.
