Thier eyes were watching god

“She knew now that marriage did not make love. Janie’s first dream was dead, so she became a woman”(Hurston 35). Janie Starks had three husbands in her lifetime. Her first marriage was arranged and not a marriage of love, her husband had little control over her. Her second marriage started out like a fairy tale, but it turned into a smothering relationship, to the point where Janie wasn’t even allowed to speak. But her final husband was her true love and nothing could break that. Because when there is true love control is not an issue. Each of Janie’s three husbands in Their Eyes Were Watching God had different types of control over her.

Janie’s first husband Logan Killicks owned and worked on a farm. Janie’s grandmother arranged the marriage when Janie was just 17 years old. Logan did fancy Janie, but she did not like him the same as he like her. Janie said in a conversation with her grandmother, “’Cause you told me Ah mus gointer love him, and, and, Ah don’t”(Hurston 23). Right after their marriage he would always say sweet things to her but that soon stopped. One day Logan said to Janie,

“If Ah kin haul de wood heah and chop it fuh yuh, look lak you oughta be able tuh tote it inside. Mah

Having Logan and Joe behind her now, she would not let herself fall into another relationship like these previous ones. During a baseball game, that nearly the whole town attended, Janie stayed at the store. A man came strolling in and it would change her life. He asked HER to play checkers. “How about playin’ you some checkers? You looks hard to beat”(Hurston 95). She was shocked, and flattered at the same time. She asked herself, who is this man and why is he asking me to play checkers? So he taught her and they played and they had a lot of fun. He started coming around more regularly, and they went fishing together, and went on picnics, and went to movies and he didn’t ask anything of her. They did normal stuff together and she loved it to death. This man known as Tea Cake let Janie be Janie. And he treated her right. Janie slowly fell in love with him. But this time it was real love. “He was a glance from God”(Hurston 106). They spent all sorts of time together. He even took her hunting. The towns’ people talked about her. And said that going out and doing things like that was bellow her, and not proper. But this was something Janie never had and she loved it all. Janie and Tea Cake left Eatonville, they went to Orlando for a while then they moved on down to the muck in the Florida everglades. In Janie and Tea Cake’s relationship, there was no control. They loved each other and new it and finally Janie’s dream was fulfilled. They couldn’t stand to be apart from each other. While down working on the muck, Tea Cake hated being away from Janie. “Janie, Ah gits lonesome out dere all day ‘thout yuh. After dis, you betta come git uh job uh work out dere lak de rest uh de woman-so Ah wont be losin’ time comin’ home”(Hurston 133). He didn’t command her to get a job with him he told her he missed her so much while at work, that he wanted her to join him at work everyday. She loved the idea. She didn’t want to be a housewife anymore. She joined him working in the muck picking beans for a living and she loved every second of it.

One morning Logan yelled to Janie, “Come help me move dis manure pile befo’ de sun gits hot. You don’t take a bit of interest in dis place. ‘Tain’t no use in foolin’ round in dat kitchen all day long”(Hurston 31). Janie again didn’t care to help her husband with the work. This time though he slapped her around a bit. But finally proving that Logan had no control over her at all, “Janie hurried out of the front gate and turned south”(Hurston 32). She ran away to meet up with Joe Starks. Logan didn’t have control over Janie because she left and he couldn’t stop her.

Unfortunately this love and control free relationship ended with the death of Tea Cake. It broke Janie’s heart, but at least for the two year she spent with Tea Cake she was free of control. Logan tried to control Janie but it just didn’t work. She did not love him ever and never would. Joe was the man who Janie spent the majority of her life with. It started as a fairy tale love. He swept her off her feet and she ran away with him. But
