A Fitting End
William Shakespeare’s Macbeth is a gruesome depiction of how greed and evilintent combined with authoritative power can cause a man to turn against his friends all for the sake of being more powerful. Macbeth takes place in Scotland around the time of the Irish-Norwegian invasion of Scotland (approximately 700-800 AD). Macbeth and his fellow Scots have been away battling the Norwegian vikings and return victorious to find a group of witches who tell Macbeth that he will someday become King of Scotland; however, before they can explain what they mean, the witches disappear. Upon hearing of Macbeth’s heroism during the battles, King Duncan names him Thane of Cawdor (in addition to already being Thane of Glamis) thus making him probably the second most powerful man in Scotland (behind only the King himself). Macbeth graciously accepts the offer and invites Duncan to stay a night at Macbeth’s castle Inverness. Upon hearing of her husband’s accomplishments, Lady Macbeth’s true inner evil is shown to the reader when she tries to convince Macbeth that he should kill Duncan, lay the blame upon someone else, and thus become King of Scotland.
