The first example of truth vs. mendacity is between Brick and Big daddy. Big Daddy has cancer and everyone in the house knows he has cancer and knows he is going to pass away but no one says anything. Except Brick when they were fighting and in the heat of the moment Brick sprays it out. Also in this house most of the family just act like they love each other, or maybe feel like they have too just because they are family members. Big Daddy who could write a book on mendacity spills out a lot of truth for example. He tells his own wife that he can’t stand her. He always made smart comments or made fun of her but he says he doesn’t love her. That is not unlike Brick and Maggie Brick does not love Maggie enough to have a child together. Brick doesn’t love Maggie enough to have sex with her. So here are two marriages with out love. Gooper married some one and had five kids which don’t mean he loves them but nothing in this play says he doesn’t. Gooper on the other hand is not loved by his own immediate family. Big momma says, where’s Brick, Where’s Brick my only son, while Gooper is in that very room. Than Big Daddy enters the room and totally ignores Gooper and tells a joke to Brick. How would you feel if you’re alcoholic probably homosexual brother (In those years it was frowned upon) gets all the attention and your not even considered to be part of the family.
